First Glance: “Juror #2”

Motion picture icon Clint Eastwood returns with his highly anticipated thriller “Juror #2”. His incredible career has seen him star in countless big screen classics. But he’s also flourished behind the camera. “Juror #2” marks the 40th film directed by the 94-year-old legend. Written by Jonathan Abrams and featuring a terrific cast, Eastwood’s latest has the look of a potential awards season contender. It would be a fitting result for what is rumored to be the final film of his storied career.

The new trailer offers us a tantalizing taste of what we’re in for. The film stars Nicholas Hoult playing a family man caught in a fascinating moral dilemma. He’s been chosen as a juror for a high-profile murder trial but quickly discovers that he may have more of a connection to the case than he imagined. Toni Collette, J.K. Simmons, Zoey Deutch, Chris Messina, Kiefer Sutherland, Cedric Yarbrough, and Leslie Bibb round out the sterling cast in what has quickly turned into one of my most anticipated movies of the year.

“Juror #2” premieres at AFI Fest on October 27th and will open in select theaters on November 1st. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

First Glance: “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina”

Information has been sparse concerning the John Wick movies but news came a while ago about a new film that will expand the John Wick universe. That movie is “Ballerina”, or more properly, “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina”. It’s a film that was immediately met with a lot of hesitation. But the long-awaited first trailer alleviates many of the concerns. It very much looks like a John Wick movie. And seeing the beloved faces of Ian McShane, Lance Reddick (in his final screen role), Anjelica Huston, and Keanu Reeves himself only strengthens that sentiment.

Franchise director Chad Stahelski hands the reins to Len Wiseman (the Underworld films). The story is set between John Wick Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 with Ana de Armas playing Eve Macarro, a ballerina turned assassin who sets out to pay back the people who killed her father. Her thirst for vengeance leads her down an action-fueled path that looks to follow the John Wick formula. And that’s a good thing!

“From the World of John Wick: Ballerina” is currently set to release June 6, 2025. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

First Glance: “Sinners”

Ryan Coogler reteams with his favorite muse, Michael B. Jordan in “Sinners”, a movie that has been described as a supernatural gothic action horror film (whew, that’s a mouthful). Coogler and Jordan have already worked together on a range of films that includes “Fruitvale Station”, “Creed”, and “Black Panther”. The new trailer for their latest collaboration adds another unique entry into their catalog.

Set in 1930s Louisiana, “Sinners” sees Jordan playing a young man involved in a troubling event alongside his twin brother. The two return to their hometown in hopes of making a new start. But they find a sinister force waiting on them which sends them to someplace dark and unexpected. Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo, and Jayme Lawson also star. The trailer hints at a mysterious and compelling story. I can’t wait to see how it plays.

“Sinners” is set to release March 7, 2025. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

First Glance: “Thunderbolts”

The idea of the Thunderbolts has always been an intriguing one. Stories revolving around a group of reformed supervillains working for the United States government is ripe with potential. It’s Marvel’s execution of that idea that has often been suspect. Now the Marvel Cinematic Universe is preparing to release their big screen version of the antihero supergroup and so far it hasn’t looked encouraging. The lineup hasn’t sparked much enthusiasm and neither does the newly released first trailer.

The trailer for “Thunderbolts” puts most of its emphasis on Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova who finds herself lured into a web with several other antiheroes including her father, Red Guardian (David Harbour), Bucky Barnes (Sebastain Stan), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and Sentry (Lewis Pullman). Through circumstances that somehow aren’t revealed in the nearly three-and-a-half minute trailer, the group of not-so-bad seeds are forced to work together against some global threat. A few other familiar faces return in what has been and remains an underwhelming new MCU installment.

“Thunderbolts” hit theaters May 2, 2025. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.
