First Glance: “Lee”

A sparkling cast stand out in the first trailer for “Lee”, a British biographical drama and the feature film debut for director Ellen Kuras. Based on the 1985 biography “The Lives of Lee Miller” by Antony Penrose, the film stars Kate Winslet as war journalist Lee Miller. The stellar supporting cast includes Marion Cotillard, Andrea Riseborough, Alexander Skarsgård, Andy Samberg, Josh O’Connor, Noémie Merlant, and James Murray. After premiering at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, “Lee” is now set for a theater release later this year.

The trailer gives us a pretty broad look at the movie’s scope as it chronicles Lee Miller’s journey from being a model to becoming a photographer for Vogue magazine where she covered the horrors of World War II, often from the frontlines. The period detail looks great from the costumes to the war sequences. And the ensemble looks to fit their roles well. I’m looking forward to giving this one a shot.

“Lee” releases in theaters on September 27th. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

First Glance: “We Live in Time”

Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield star in “We Live in Time”, a decade-spanning romantic drama from director John Crowley (“Brooklyn”). The film is written by screenwriter and playwright Nick Payne and executive produced by Benedict Cumberbatch. It’s set to have its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and just dropped its first trailer. This slice-of-life first look is equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking.

The film follows the relationship between Almut (Pugh) and Tobias (Garfield), starting with their chance meeting all the way through to an illness that challenges them and the beautiful life they’ve built together. In addition to Payne’s ambitious script, Crowley looks to be leaning heavily on his two young stars and from what little glimpse we get, Pugh and Garfield seem to have tremendous chemistry. There are still some questions, but there are also some good reasons to be excited for this one.

“We Live in Time” releases in theaters in Fall 2024. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

First Glance: “Gladiator II”

Hearing the news of a sequel to 2000’s epic “Gladiator” left me skeptical. I adore the classic Russell Crowe-led original (it was the first DVD I ever owned) and the idea of following it up some 24 years later left me with several concerns. Easing my mind a bit was the return of Ridley Scott as producer AND director. Surely he wouldn’t return if there wasn’t a big vision and a meaningful story to tell…right?

Today Paramount dropped the long awaited first trailer for “Gladiator II”, a massive production sporting a near $300 million budget. Aside from some odd music choices, the trailer certainly looks to have some interesting ideas. At the same time, it also looks to be following a fairly similar blueprint as the 2000 film. Hopefully it isn’t too similar.

Paul Mescal plays Lucius Verus, the grandson of Rome’s murdered emperor Marcus Aurelius (see the first film) and former heir to the Empire. He is taken away from his wife and child by an ambitious general (Pedro Pascal). Following in the footsteps of Crowe’s Maximus, Lucius chooses to fight as a gladiator and inspire the people to stand against the cruel new emperors of Rome. The always great Denzel Washington looks to have a significant role and Connie Nielsen returns as the mother of Lucius. I remain both hesitant and excited. Regardless, there are some really good ingredients here.

“Gladiator II” releases in theaters on November 22nd. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.
