First Glance: “The Mandalorian and Grogu”

It’s been seven years since a new Star Wars movie has released in theaters. The beloved franchise has steadily grown via animated and live-action streaming series, novels, video games, and so on. But for those of us who love seeing “The Galaxy Far, Far Away” on the big screen, it has been a painful drought. That changes in three months with the release of “The Mandalorian and Grogu”. This feature film follows three seasons of the popular Disney+ series “The Mandalorian”. And judging by the new trailer, we fans have a lot to look forward to.

Director Jon Favreau’s excitement over making his first Star Wars movie has been evident since it was first announced. And you can see it in the new trailer. “The Mandalorian and Grogu” looks to be a sprawling adventure, set upon some new planets and introducing some new characters to the universe. To LucasFilm’s credit, they’re still leaving the story details under wraps. But it looks as if Mando and Grogu are in for plenty of action and some unexpected threats. The trailer is full of new faces and some deep cuts for hardcore fans. I can’t wait!

“The Mandalorian and Grogu” soars into theaters on May 22nd. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

NEON’s “Sentimental Value” Gets New Character Posters

As frequent readers of this site may know, I’m a sucker for character posters. And it’s not often that you see them for emotionally weighty family dramas like “Sentimental Value”. But with the film now showing in select theaters and with it just receiving nine Academy Award nominations, NEON has released four posters of the film’s four Oscar-nominated stars.

“Sentimental Value” follows a struggling family attempting to reconnect despite years of buried pain and estrangement. Renate Reinsve and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas play very different yet very close sisters. Stellan Skarsgård plays their father who suddenly re-enters their lives. And Elle Fanning plays an outsider with a very unique perspective on their relationships. The characters are rich and compelling; the performances are phenomenal and awards-worthy. You can read my full review of the film [HERE].

First Glance: “Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord”

Unlike any other franchise, Star Wars has taken the idea of canon and continuity to places no others have. What started in a series of feature films has blossomed to novels, comics, video games, animated and live-action television. And all of it interconnected through the same sprawling epic timeline. It’s true that Star Wars has hit some recent rough patches. But the overall world is still precious to fans like me, and one area where it continues to thrive is in its animation.

“The Clone Wars,” “Rebels,” and “The Bad Batch” have expanded Star Wars lore in exciting ways. That trend looks to continue with “Maul – Shadow Lord”. Set in the aftermath of the Clone Wars, this new series follows one of the franchise’s most compelling characters, Maul, as he builds his underworld syndicate, trains a new apprentice, and keeps his vengeful eye on the power-mad Empire. The first trailer gives us a thrilling look at what may be the darkest animated series yet. Even more, the show will feature the voice work of a returning Sam Witwer and recent Oscar nominee Wagner Moura. This looks amazing.

“Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord” will premiere April 6th exclusively on Disney+. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.
