The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has unveiled their precursor to the Oscars – the 2016 Golden Globe nominations. As with many of these things there were a few surprises while several nominations went just how you would expect. Here are a handful of random thoughts on today’s announcements:
- Sylvester Stallone gets a Supporting Actor nomination. I finished my review of “Creed” by saying Sly could get some awards attention. Thrilled to see it. It is well deserved and it shouldn’t be viewed as some type of token nomination.
- “The Revenant” received four Golden Globe nominations for 2015 films yet it doesn’t release until January 8, 2016. Yes I’m aware this is how it has been, but it is still annoying. Get the movie out. It’s finished for very select audiences but not for the rest of us?
- What a morning for Idris Elba. He was nominated for both film and television. I can’t speak to his TV work, but his performance in “Beasts of No Nation” is top-tier. I would have no problem with him taking home the award.
- Despite all of the praise we have heard throughout the year, I had a suspicion that “Mad Max: Fury Road” would conveniently miss out come awards time. Happy to be wrong. The film was nominated for Best Picture – Drama and Best Director. It certainly deserves the recognition. It’s one of the best films of the year and one of the best action movies from the past several years.
- Who told Dennis Quaid how to pronounce Saoirse Ronan’s name? Was it John Travolta? But it could be worse. He could’ve said Dick Poop!
- Who knew ” The Martian” was a comedy? Or was it a musical?
- Way back when the first trailer for “Carol” landed I tweeted that it was guaranteed a ton of nominations. It looked polished and primed for awards time. This morning it received five Golden Globe nominations. These things can be so predictable.
- “Spy”? I mean it isn’t as teeth-grinding as a lot of Melissa McCarthy’s stuff, but nominations for Best Picture – Comedy or Musical and Best Actress? That’s a stretch.
- I love seeing a smaller film like “Room” getting such recognition. For some reason I expect Oscar to give it the cold shoulder so I’m glad the Globes gave it some well deserved attention.
- Quentin Tarantino got his obligatory screenplay nomination, but “The Hateful Eight” only landed two others (Jennifer Jason- Leigh for Best Supporting Actress and Original Score). But QT acolytes shouldn’t worry. The Academy loves him….kind of.
- And Will Smith for “Concussion”? Obviously I haven’t seen the film or the performance, but this nomination seemed to come out of left field.
- And no Meryl Streep? How can this be? How could this be allowed to happen? Thankfully Oscar always reserves a slot for her regardless of how undeserving the nomination may be.
- While I didn’t expect it to be nominated, I’m still a bit bummed that “Sicario” got nothing. Fantastic thriller and phenomenal supporting work from Benicio Del Toro. But again, not unexpected.
- I think it’s safe to say that Alicia Vikander is pretty happy this morning. Two acting nominations but not a third for “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.”? The HFP must have forgot about that one.
- We can now actually say “The Golden Globe nominated Fifty Shades of Grey”. Nothing about that sounds right!
- I always forget that the Golden Globes and has no award for cinematography or documentary. That is a bit absurd.
- The best and most intriguing category this year – Best Supporting Actor. I mean look at this group: Elba, Stallone, Shannon, Dano, and Rylance. Really strong.
- What’s with all of the nominated one word titles? Room, Carol, Spotlight, Joy, Spy, Trainwreck, Trumbo, Brooklyn, Concussion, Grandma, Creed, Anomalisa, Youth, Spectre, Mustang.

Yes. It’s released on the 8th. It so happens to be the topic of discussion on the 13th for me, and it means only people who have had a chance to watch it would be willing and able to participate, but I think it will be an important film of the year, so I hope UK friends, et al, will get a chance to see it. I can’t wait to talk about it! I’m not the least bit interested in the new Tarantino film. I’m surprised (and glad) Meryl wasn’t nominated. I’m happy Mad Max: Fury road is nominated. Alicia Vikander deserves recognition. I agree, The Martian is a comedy?
Is it just me or are the films a little weak this year? Not many were powerhouse hitters….
I’m with you about Meryl. Not saying she isn’t a good actress but some of her nominations are suspect and she hasn’t done anything this year that warrants one. But don’t count out the Academy. I’m with you on Tarantino. His film isn’t on my radar. I felt the same way about this year’s movies but this month I’ve really caught up with some good ones. It’s actually made my top 10 list a little tougher.
Oh, good. I’m looking forward to reading it. I haven’t seen Carol, yet, but I do love Blanchett and Rooney Mara.

Please find someone to explain it to me? When they announce that I literally laughed out loud. Obviously there were a couple of chuckles in the movie but a comedy? Or was it the disco music that qualified it as a musical? Bizarre!

I’m very pleased for Stallone, but more than a little bored by the inevitable nominations for Lawrence and Tarantino.
Is Lawrence becoming the new Streep? To be fair I haven’t seen Joy but wasn’t her nomination easy to predict? Same for QT.
1) Of course THE MARTIAN is a musical. Did you forget all the disco songs? Jejeje! Seriously though, it has a lot of humour. Maybe not enough to be considered a comedy, but enough to debate about the genre.
2) I (and others) thought that a nomination for Meryl Streep was a safe thing. RICKI & THE FLASH is both a comedy and a musical. Instead, they nominated its male equivalent DANNY COLLINS.
3) Did you really think THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. would be nominated for anything?
4) Did you notice that SPOTLIGHT is the only movie nominated for both directing and writing? It’s obvious it will win.

The song category seems particularly lame this year. It’s probably too obscure but I would have picked Fine on the Outside by Priscilla Ahn from When Marnie was There.
But as far as the animated nominations I’m actually pleasantly surprised Good Dinosaur got the nomination. I personally loved the film but a lot of people didn’t so wasn’t sure.
I will be perfectly honest, none of the songs nominated resonated with me at all. I couldn’t even a single tune out of them. I don’t know if that says more about the songs or me. 🙂
I agree. They are all lame. I’m surprised a song from Brooklyn didn’t make it but maybe not original. Not sure.
Oh that’s a good one. I actually just walked out of the theater and that song stuck with me.
Just finally saw the noms in the afternoon as I was off my computer all morning, didn’t even realize GG noms are here already. I know we’re both happy for Spotlight right Keith? Happy to see Mad Max get a nom, but no nomination for Charlize and nothing for Hardy even for Legend? A travesty!! Ppl were confused The Martian is nominated under comedy but then again GG categorization is always so weird. Did anybody notice Christian Bale got his 2nd GG acting nom in the musical/comedy category?
Hey Ruth! Interesting observation about Bale but I wouldn’t be surprised if his film was the same type of comedy as “The Martian”. But like you said, the Globes do it weird.
And yes, extremely excited to see “Spotlight” do well. But no acting nominations for it?
Mad Max was my favorite movie of the year thus far. Maybe Star Wars overtakes that possibly but there’s no denying how good Fury Road was. I really hope come Oscar time the Academy does the right thing for once and places in among the nominees.
Man I hope so. It is right up there near the top for me as well. Has been from the moment I walked out of the theater. Tremendous movie that deserves to be in the conversation. I do think it will get some nominations, but I don’t have a ton of confidence in the Academy. It wouldn’t surprise me if they left it out of the big prizes. I do feel better though seeing it so well represented at the Globes. Here’s hoping the Academy actually gets it right.
The wait for The Revenant is going to be excruciating.
Spy was a lot funnier than I expected it to be, but I would’ve rather had Infinitely Polar Bear get a picture nod to go along with Ruffalo’s. That film is so great.
I’m all for Dano and Shannon being in Supporting, I hope they go all the way to the Oscars. I love those two.
The Revenant wait ticks me off. I hate that they pop it on the screen for a select few that way they can call it a 2015 movie. I’m holding my Top 10 list because I have a good feeling about that flick!
I really want to see Infinitely Polar Bear. It certainly wins ‘Craziest Name’ award.
