First Glance: “Top Gun: Maverick”

“Top Gun” is one of many 80s movies that I’ve seen more times than I can count. It was among several that always found its way into our family VCR. I’m aware that it doesn’t play as well for younger audiences today as it did then, but I still love it for its undeniable cheese and deeper subtexts.

But even I was surprised to hear that some 34 years later a sequel was on the way. Tom Cruise himself surprised a crowd at San Diego Comic-Con and introduced the teaser trailer for “Top Gun: Maverick”. We don’t see much in terms of story but fans of the original will notice it does hit many familiar beats. Cruise finished up by telling the crowd everything in the film is real and calling the movie “a love letter to aviation”.

I’m really interested to see and hear more, but we will probably have to wait a while. “Top Gun: Maverick” is set for a June 26, 2020 release. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

  1. I liked the first film and Cruise rarely disappoints, so I’m all in. Is it going along with the wave of nostalgia, sure, but I loved the era of movies and music, and at least this is a new story of Maverick and whats happening in his life now, not a reboot. So yep I’m ready for some danger zone. Yes I own the soundtrack lol

    • Ha!!! I still have that soundtrack as well. It’s definitely a new story and not a reboot (thank goodness). I’m looking forward to it.

  2. I remember hearing news of a Top Gun sequel sporadically since 2010 and I kept thinking whyyyyy? I loved the original too. I watched it so many times that I wore out the tape. But I just didn’t see the need for a sequel. I’m happy to have my ass handed to me on that front. After that gorgeous launch shot in the cockpit, I am ALL IN. Danger zone.

    • Oh man! That launch from the carrier looked freaking amazing. It’s funny, that’s the shot that got me smiling the most. Imagine what they will be able to capture with today’s technology!

  3. You aren’t kidding about the cheese factor. I haven’t seen it for years, but your preview made me want to relive a couple of my favorite – so bad they’re good – lines of dialog, I think they embedded themselves in my brain, unfortunately, I put a couple favorites below. I also just remembered that it had Meg Ryan before she was Meg Ryan, that’s going back a bit. I might actually go see it if the reviews aren’t too dreadful. Here –

Son, your ego is writing checks your body can’t cash.

    And this one –

Charlie: That is right, but I held something back. I see some real genius in your flying, Maverick, but I can’t say that in there. I was afraid that everyone in the TACTS trailer would see right through me, and I just don’t want anyone to know that I’ve fallen for you.

  4. This a dope trailer but the studio is being a bitch again – first they release Bumbleebee against Aquaman and now this against Wonder Woman 1984. Cruise is a mega star and they are clearly marketing this as Mission Impossible with jets but they underestimate the female demographic on this one, between this and Diana it’s clear what I’m watching 😛
