“Eternals” remains one of the most curious films on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s docket. As the MCU slowly moves away from many of its most iconic superheroes and forges its own new batch, the Eternals seemed like an odd choice. But Kevin Feige and his team of wizards at Marvel Studios have locked up the unwavering trust of their intensely loyal fan base. At this point they could introduce anyone they want and the pushback would be minimal to none at all.
The final trailer for “Eternals” dropped today and its purpose seems obvious. It gives us a closer look at this team of immortals while teasing answers to glaringly obvious questions, namely why didn’t these protectors of earth help when Thanos was having his way with humanity. The trailer has an interesting yet unusual vibe that makes it resemble a sci-fi drama more than a comic book inspired superhero movie. I’m sure much of that is due to the unique sensibility director Chloé Zhao brings. How will it ultimately play out? We’ll find out in November.

Keith & the Movies 
It looks like The Eternals is going to address the consequences of Thanos AND the Avengers using the Infinity Stones to slaughter and then heal half the universe. Obviously using that kind of power is going to have consequences, even unforeseen ones. I think that’s an interesting idea, but I’ll be honest: I’m not impressed with the marketing so far. Maybe it’s because I’m all burned out on the whole saving the world/universe schtick, but these trailers look generic to me. I could be wrong, and the final movie could end up being something completely outstanding, but so far, I haven’t seen anything that’s going to compel me to see this movie in November. Right now, I’m more interested in Shang-Chi and what that movie is going to bring.
I’m with you. There’s a real lethargic vibe to these trailers that hasn’t really grabbed me the way I hoped. I can’t quite put my finger on what they’re going for.
I really want this movie to succeed for Zhao and because I’m a big MCU fan, but I’m having a hard time seeing how this is going to mesh with the Avengers and Guardians. I wish I would’ve avoided spoilers.
I wondering too. Zhao is such a fascinating choice and I hope she knocks it out of the park.
Just watched it a second time and… yeah, I’m seeing this as I already got my ticket for Shang-Chi already. This does look different but really cool. I just hope I can see Nomadland first and then this film.

The first trailer didn’t do much for me, but I have to say this one got my attention. It has a unique feel and as you said style for sure. It will be interesting as the MCU moves into these types of lower-tier characters if the audience will hold, But one positive thing, it might allow for some unique storytelling and an expanded palate.
I hope it plays out that way. For me it’s hard to see a Marvel Universe with no Steve Rogers, Bruce Banner, or Tony Stark. I’m still giving it a shot. Lots of potential.

Maybe it’s superhero fatigue, but the whole thing looks painfully generic. I don’t want it to fail, and I’m really curious about the actual movie, but if the final product is ANYTHING like this trailer, this very well could be the MCU’s first real failure. Honestly, I think DC has the upper hand right now with Joker, The Suicide Squad, Zack Snyder’s Justice League and upcoming movies like The Batman, The Flash, Black Adam, and Shazam! 2. DC’s taking more risks with their properties, and those risks seem to be paying off, not necessarily financially, but in terms of audience and critical response. Marvel needs to up their game, especially in the marketing department.
I’m really curious about ETERNALS but not incredibly excited. I want to be but the MCU is in a weird spot for me. I too like what DC is doing although I think stepping away from Snyder is a mistake.
Well, they certainly didn’t do Snyder any favors outside of letting him finish Justice League. Ultimately, though, it was the audience that really wasn’t behind Snyder, as they didn’t go to see his movies, so it’s not entirely DC’s fault. I think DC’s in a position to succeed whereas Marvel is in a position to fail. Marvel’s tapping into characters and stories that most people have never heard of, while DC’s taking some fairly known properties and doing something interesting with them. Marvel was on top with the MCU for 11 years, but with the response to Black Widow, I don’t really see Marvel maintaining their momentum for much longer. Shang-Chi might be successful, but with Eternals and Doctor Strange 2, they’re taking the MCU into some really bizarre territory. Your average movie-goer is not going to be nearly as excited as the hard-core fans, and you really want to reach the people that aren’t as familiar. Kevin Feige has been good at doing that, but even HE has limits as a film-maker to reach certain elements of the audience.
