First Glance: “Bird Box Barcelona”

In December of 2018 Netflix released “Bird Box”, a Sandra Bullock led post-apocalyptic horror thriller that became an overnight sensation for the streaming platform. The film was based on a Josh Malerman novel and was directed by Susanne Bier. While critics were a bit tepid, the film gained a big following which has led to “Bird Box Barcelona”, Spanish spin-off from the filmmaking duo of Álex and David Pastor. Netflix has dropped the first trailer and it looks pretty wild.

“Bird Box Barcelona” introduces a new set of characters, this time in post-apocalyptic Spain. It follows a father named Sebastián (Mario Casas) and his daughter Anna (Alejandra Howard) as they navigate the titular city which is being decimated by an entity that can drive people to kill themselves simply by looking at it. Along the way they meet some who become welcomed allies and others who are as vile and deadly as the mysterious entity itself. It’s a pretty compelling and wicked trailer and I’m interested to see what the Pastor’s have in store for us.

“Bird Box Barcelona” premieres July 14th on Netflix. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

  1. I still haven’t seen the original film (while I’m aware that both Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross scored the film though neither of them thought highly of their score) as I’m not sure about seeing this one.

I was looking through your Twitter scroll and honestly, I wouldn’t take a compliment from some aging, hot-doggin’, grand-standin’, couch-jumping midget who worships a fictional alien being. Why do you think The Flash bombed?

    • I think there are a variety of things that have contributed to it, some fair and some not so much.

The unfair first. I think there is a lot more tribalism in the superhero movie space than some people want to accept. I think there are a lot of people who love the MCU and are quick to dump on anything with DC tacked to it (that isn’t Batman).

I also think there is a pretty strong anti-DC sentiment among many of the Snyder fans. Now let me be clear, I’m a huge fan of what Snyder was doing with the DCEU and I absolutely hate that we’ll never see his vision fulfilled. But I am NOT a fan of how some of the Snyder-heads have acted. And that includes boycotting most of the DC movies being released including “The Flash”.

I also think there is a feeling that this movie was pointless considering James Gunn is rebooting everything. I feel some probably said “what’s the point” and are waiting to stream it. It’ll be interesting to see if this carries over to “Aquaman 2”.

And of course you have to consider the Ezra Miller impact. I fully expected some to bow out just because of Miller’s out-of-control antics. I’m guessing many did.

      • I hate tribalism. It ruins everything. I’m not anti-DCEU as I wanted it to succeed as I do think Zack Snyder has talent and some good ideas. I do feel bad that everything he had tried to work on got shit on by a bunch of people and egos that cared more about money and themselves than making good movies.

Ezra Miller is someone that I think the industry needs to push aside for a period of time unless he found ways to redeem himself. Otherwise, he needs to go away.

      • I agree with you about both Snyder and Miller. I will say I don’t think Miller will be wearing the Flash suit again after this box office disaster (whether fair or not).

  2. I enjoyed the movie but am another one that didn’t understand why there was all the hype about it. This one looks good too, might be better, so will give it a go.
