There has been a lot of buzz, both good and bad, about James Gunn’s ascension to the head of DC Studios. Without question Gunn has his fans and they aren’t afraid to share their support. But there just as many who are skeptical and for good reason. I remain a huge fan of the Zack Snyder cinematic universe that existed prior to the studio tearing it apart. And I’ve been lukewarm on Gunn’s superhero projects which often follow the same blueprint. But I’m very open to seeing his vision for DC starting with “Superman”.
The first teaser trailer for Gunn’s “Superman” has dropped and it gives us a first glance at the film that will kick off his DC universe. The trailer doesn’t reveal much but it allows us to see David Corenswet in action as both Superman and Clark Kent. We see Rachel Brosnahan as the new Lois Lane. We see Nicholas Hoult as the universe’s Lex Luthor. We even see a caped Krypto which brought an ear-to-ear smile to my face.
But the trailer is littered with other heroes and villains which speaks to one of my biggest concerns – is Gunn cramming too much into his first film. We’ll see. And while the trailer offers a number of captivating images, I still don’t have a good feel of the movie or of Gunn’s vision for the character. Will he capture the essence of Superman? Can he make Superman resonate with a new audience? Can he win over those who preferred a “Man of Steel” sequel? Who knows. But I’ll be there on opening day to see.
“Superman” flies into theaters on July 11, 2025. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.
I’ll be honest here: I’m not impressed. I’m not saying it looks bad, but it’s not blowing my skirt up, either, so to speak. It DOES feel like Gunn is packing too much into it, and that rarely ends well. Hopefully he’s written it well enough to accommodate all these characters, but it’s going to take a lot to assuage my concerns about the movie. I hope James Gunn proves me wrong, but if this is going to be the start of his new DCU, I’m worried about its future. I need another trailer. This one isn’t working for me.
I completely understand and overall feel the same way. I need to see more. I’m trying to stay optimistic. But like you, I need to see more.
Well they’ve epicified the music for sure, and there’s a Superdog!! I’m gonna watch it just for that! 🤣
A Superdog for sure. Krypto was the highlight. 😁
I’ve seen this trailer… TWICE already and…. I’m fucking stoked for this. I love James Gunn and it evokes some of the aspects of why I love Superman. I also like the new approach and most of all… Krypto! That dog better not fucking die in the film. I will be very pissed off. I hate watching movies where the dog dies.
Krypto is much safer than any of the humans. LOL. I like the trailer but need to see more.
I will see this only because the Christopher Reeve versions left an example of how well it can be made.
but am sharing your concerns about cramming characters. I will also add that Cgi motions are a bit counter effective for some action scenes (am not too fond of that scene in the trailer where someone is pushing superman on the sports ground)
There are definitely reasons to be cautious. Hopefully Gunn does it justice.
I like the looks of it via the trailer. Love the idea of a super dog. An animal that isn’t some freakish cartoon character.
Yep, Krypto has a long history in the comics. He should be a blast.
Oh ok, Krypto is his name. I won’t ask why they named him after a deadly poison to Superman 😉
LOL. He’s actually named after Superman’s home planet, Krypton.
Oh, now the plot thickens. His home (planet) has a lethal element to it 😉 Sorry, it’s how my mind works.
LOLOL
I Think David Corenswetas Clark Kent / Superman In Superman 2025 is once great Casting of All Time
I’m pretty impressed with him too. Lots a good potential. Hopefully Gunn can pull it off.
I Think Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane In Superman 2025 is once great Casting of All Time
I Think Elizabeth Debicki would be great choice as Wonder Woman/Princess Diana of Themyscira In James Gunn Reboot DCEU
I Think Austin Butler as Green Arrow/Oliver Jonas Queen & Sydney Sweeney as Black Canary/ Dinah ‘Laurel’ Lance In James Gunn Reboot DCEU
Seeing it
Me too. And it will be here before you know it.
I Think Superman 2025 will make $1 Billion at the Box Office!
