First Glance: “Avatar: Fire and Ash”

The much anticipated first trailer for James Cameron’s third Avatar feature made a splash playing exclusively in theaters ahead of “The Fantastic Four”. Now everyone gets their first look at “Avatar: Fire and Ash”. Admittedly, 2009’s “Avatar” blew me away as a technical achievement but left me cold and indifferent with its story. But its sequel, 2022’s “The Way of Water”, reshaped the way I looked at the entire franchise. Not only did it make the first film better, it expanded on it in some incredible ways both visually and narratively. I was immediately looking forward to a third film.

“Fire and Ash” looks to follow the mammoth success of its predecessors which each made well over $2 billion at the global box office. With a $250 million budget behind it, “Fire and Ash” expands Cameron’s epic world even further, introducing new parts of Pandora, new tribes, new creatures, and new threats. But at its core remains a family-centered story which follows the tragic events of the second film. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and many others return in what is sure to be one of the biggest motion picture events of the year.

“Avatar: Fire and Ash” soars into theaters on December 19th. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

  1. I will be seeing this mainly out of curiosity, and we agree about the sequel – it is better than the first. The tribal-warrior action pictures are very typical but they can still be great entertainment.

  2. I really liked the first movie, but I feel that Disney/20th Century is giving James Cameron WAY too much latitude with Avatar. I’m not denying their technical stuff on display at all. These are stunning movies to look at. My problem is with the run time. These movies are over 3 hours long each(if you count the extended cut of the original movie), and it sounds like Fire and Ash is still going to go way over the 3 hour mark. I didn’t see the second movie in theaters BECAUSE it was too long. I’m not opposed to 3 hour epics, but this is Avatar, not Lawrence of Arabia. Not even close. Yeah, these movies are clearly financially successful, but James Cameron’s ego is on full display. Sure, he’s earned it, but it’s still painfully obvious. With what he’s got planned for the franchise, I don’t think I’m going to be a part of that journey. I wasn’t impressed with the trailer for Fire and Ash. At all. What I saw was just more of the same.

    • I can respect that. Honestly, the runtime was never issue for me, especially in the second film. For me it felt truly epic and earned its runtime. It’s a tricky thing though. If you miss your marks, that long runtime suddenly becomes an unbearable drag. For my money, Cameron has avoided that….so far.

      • That’s the thing for me: James Cameron has ALWAYS been on the ball. There isn’t a movie of his that I haven’t liked. But Way of Water was where he started to lose me. I still liked it, but for me it was a step backwards in terms of story-telling. Give me another trailer for Fire and Ash and I might give it another look.
