First Glance: “Gunpowder Milkshake”

Now here’s a movie title that grabs your attention! “Gunpowder Milkshake” is an upcoming action-thriller-comedy from Israeli filmmaker Navot Papushado. It has a tantalizing cast that includes Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Angela Bassett, Paul Giamatti, Carla Gugino, Michelle Yeoh, and more. The film was snatched up by Netflix and has all the feel of a John Wick inspired shoot-em-up but with a few very noticeable twists. Hopefully those twists are enough to make this feel like it’s own thing.

I love seeing Karen Gillan getting starring roles and here she plays an assassin who killed “the wrong people” in order to save an 8-year-old girl. Soon there is an open contract out on her so she seeks the help of her mother (Headey), a fellow assassin who hasn’t seen her daughter in 15 years. The bullet-riddled first trailer shows action aplenty and a cracking sense of humor. You can’t help but recognize the movies it’s imitating, but the fun female led cast will hopefully give the film some extra spark. I’ll certainly be giving it a go.

“Gunpowder Milkshake” premieres July 14th on Netflix. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

First Glance: “Escape Room: Tournament of Champions”

A couple days ago we got our first look at the inevitable sequel to 2019’s low budget but highly profitable “Escape Room”. That film was an overly simplistic yet mildly entertaining horror thriller that eventually ran out of steam before completely flying off the rails in its attempt at setting up a sequel. Now we get the hilariously titled follow-up “Escape Room: Tournament of Champions” which looks to be equally silly horror-lite escapism. The film sees the return of director Adam Robitel along with star Taylor Russell.

The first trailer all but promises more of the same as Russell’s character is once again thrust into a series of lethal escape rooms. Once inside she and the new group of victims must solve each puzzle in order to get out of the room alive. Then it’s on to the next one. This time around the rooms look more elaborate and interesting (though undeniably ridiculous). Hopefully this time there is a better story thread to hold everything together. If it manages that this could be a fairly fun diversion. But I’m not getting my hopes up.

“Escape Room: Tournament of Champions” opens in theaters July 16th. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

First Glance: “Old”

We only got a tiny nibble of M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming new film “Old” during the Super Bowl. Today Universal Pictures gave us a full plate by dropping the film’s first trailer. I don’t like to put too much into trailers as they have shown to be pretty unreliable when it comes to gauging movies. But this one has me really interested in Shyamalan’s latest effort. The film looks weird, creepy, and it has the kind of mindbending plot I can really get into.

Shyamalan puts together an intriguing cast for his horror thriller about vacationing families on a secluded tropical beach. Their time of relaxing family fun turns to terror once they begin to age incredibly fast. To make matters worse, every attempt to leave the beach is repelled by unknown forces. The film features Gael García Bernal, Vicky Krieps (so good in “The Phantom Thread”), Thomasin McKenzie, Rufus Sewell, Eliza Scanlen, Alex Wolff, and more. While many people are still leery when it comes to Shyamalan, I enjoyed each of his last three movies. So sign me up.

“Old” opens in theaters July 23rd. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

First Glance: “The Tomorrow War”

A few days ago we got a tiny teaser for Amazon’s “The Tomorrow War”. Today the streaming studio dropped the first full trailer for this upcoming action science-fiction flick and one-time Paramount property. The film is directed by Chris McKay who’s probably best known for “The Lego Batman Movie”. This was yet another victim of the COVID-19 delays and was quickly gobbled up by Amazon just last month. Now it’s all set for an early July release.

Chris Pratt stars a former Delta Force operator who in order to save his family must join a fight in the future to save the planet. Sound confusing? The trailer only gives us the basics which leaves a lot of questions that hopefully will be answered. In a nutshell the military of the future are under siege by an attacking alien species. So they develop a technology to travel back in time in order to draft soldiers from the past to bring back to the future. Now you have even more questions, right? Anyway, this could be a fun popcorn flick if they’re able to make some sense of it all. The trailer doesn’t sell itself very well with a pretty generic feel and numerous hokey, overly dramatic lines. But the concept has me holding out hope.

“The Tomorrow War” premieres July 2nd on Amazon Prime streaming. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

First Glance: “Last Night in Soho”

The exciting first trailer for Edgar Wright’s new movie “Last Night in Soho” dropped today and it didn’t disappoint. This psychological horror film is built around a wonderfully twisted premise and the first images we get are eerie, moody, and soaked in tension. And while the wonderful Anya Taylor-Joy gets top billing, the most exciting for me is seeing Thomasin McKenzie handed such a meaty role. Talk about a great young actress on the rise.

Set in London and with a time travel element, “Last Night in Soho” centers around an aspiring fashion designer named Eloise (McKenzie) who is mysteriously transported to 1960’s London. There her identity seems interwoven with that of her idol, a vivacious wanna-be singer named Sandy (Taylor-Joy). But as the trailer shows all is not what it seems. Wright and Focus Features are still keeping a lot under wraps, but what they show us looks great and definitely piques my curiosity.

“Last Night in Soho” hits theaters October 22nd. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

First Glance: “Eternals”

Marvel Studios seems prepped and ready for their next big box office blitz. “Black Widow” finally hits theaters in July. “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” arrives in September. And then you have November’s “Eternals”, the star-studded superhero ensemble film co-written and directed by recent Oscar winner Chloé Zhao. That peculiar mix of filmmaker and material is enough to make me want to see the film. But outside of that I’m having a hard time getting excited for this particular MCU installment.

The new teaser trailer gives us just a glimpse of what this $200 million blockbuster has in store for loyal MCU followers. It’s great seeing Gemma Chan have such a prominent spot in the clips we get. We also see Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayak, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Barry Keoghan, and others. We learn practically nothing about this secret team of immortal protectors, but we do get to see them all costumed up. I figure that will be enough for the multitude of Marvel die-hards, but I found it to be surprisingly generic. In fairness it is just a teaser. But I need more than famous faces in spandex.

“Eternals” hits theaters November 5th. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.
