First Glance: “No Time to Die”

Bond

I have been anxiously awaiting the first glimpse of James Bond’s next adventure and FINALLY it has arrived. The trailer for “No Time to Die” hits all the marks we have come to expect from this current era of Bond films. Big action, a wealth of big twists and turns, one heck of a good supporting cast, and of course Daniel Craig returning as Bond…James Bond.

We now know with certainty that this is Craig’s final turn as the iconic 007 which makes this bittersweet. To be honest, I was a lukewarm Bond fan up until Craig’s run. His grittier and more emotionally complex take on the character drew my interest in a way other Bond films had failed to do. The pulse-pounding action and higher personal stakes have really resonated with me and this new film seems to be tapping into those strengths. Sign me up!

“No Time to Die” is set for an April 8, 2020 release. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

First Glance: “Black Widow”

WIDOW

While most of us on this side of the Atlantic were asleep Marvel Studios dropped what they are calling ‘the official teaser trailer’ for their next massive box office money maker. It is the first of only two MCU movies currently scheduled for the big screen in 2020. But for me, it’s one of the films I’m most excited for out of their entire Phase 4 lineup.

“Black Widow” has all the markings of a really good MCU film and the first trailer shows why. She’s a character with such a rich but tumultuous past and it looks like she’ll be confronting it head-on. Scarlett Johansson returns and is joined by a stellar supporting cast including Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Rachel Weisz (who we only get a glimpse of). I’m really hoping this is in the vein of “Winter Soldier” – an old school spy thriller with more practical effects than CGI. Either way, I’m in.

“Black Widow” is slated to hit theaters May 1, 2020. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

Nothing movie related today. Instead I wanted to take time to wish all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving. Whether you celebrate the holiday here in the states or you’re a reader from abroad, I want you ALL to know how truly thankful I am for each of you. I so appreciate each of the visits, the likes, and the comments over the years. Your presence on K&M really inspires me to keep doing this.

So here’s to a great rest of 2019 and a fantastic year to come. And again, THANK YOU for your support. Now if you’ll excuse me, my mother and wife and put together an epic meal not to be missed.

First Glance: “The Call of the Wild”

Jack London’s 1903 novel “The Call of the Wild” was first adapted to the screen in 1935 and starred Clark Gable, then in 1972 starring Charlton Heston, and in 1996 starring Rutger Hauer. In 2020 we’ll get a fresh new take on the adventure classic this time starring Harrison Ford and a big CGI dog. Don’t worry, it looks better than it sounds.

The first trailer shows off a grizzled Harrison Ford, a ton of gorgeous scenery, and some pretty good looking CGI effects. But I’m curious to see how well a digital doggie holds up over the span of an entire movie. You know Ford has the chops. And appearances by Dan Stevens, Omar Sy, and Karen Gillan doesn’t hurt.

“The Call of the Wild” is slated for a February 21, 2020 release. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

First Glance: “Cats”

CATS1

Let me preface this entire thing by saying I’m pretty sure I’m not the target audience for Tom Hooper’s “Cats”. This is a film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s immensely popular stage musical which was based on a T.S. Eliot’s book of cat poetry. While there has been a direct-to-video adaptation, this is the first time “Cats” has been given the big screen treatment. The new trailer has dropped and all I can think about is how weird the whole thing looks.

It’s not that I don’t like musicals, but I’m pretty picky when it comes to them. In light of that, take most of what I say with a grain of salt. The first trailer for “Cats” certainly looks like Universal has given Hooper a blank check. In fact some reports say the budget for the film is nearly $300 million. I guess it makes sense considering the elaborate set design, wild costumes, loads of makeup and CGI, and the star-studded cast (James Corden, Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, and Jennifer Hudson among others). Still, I can’t get over how bizarre (even unpleasant) it looks.

“Cats” is set to hit theaters December 20th. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

First Glance: “Wendy”

WENDY1

I have been anxiously awaiting Benh Zeitlin’s second feature since first seeing his sublime debut “Beasts of the Southern Wild”. That was all the way back in 2012. Now seven years later we get the first trailer for his followup “Wendy” and it was worth the wait. The earliest shops shows

From the trailer we can instantly tell this is a fresh take on J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. But as Zeitlin showed in “Beasts”, he has a real knack for digging into the imaginations of young children. “Wendy” looks to be trading much of the fantasy element for a more grounded, real-world approach. And many of the images we’re shown aim to convey a healthy array of heartfelt youthful emotion. For an early trailer, it really got to me.

“Wendy” is set for a February 28, 2020 release (limited I’m sure). Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.
