First Glance: “Unwelcome”

A few days ago Warner Brothers gave us a look at their new horror thriller “Unwelcome”. It comes from director Jon Wright who penned the screenplay with his frequent collaborator Mark Stay. This strange looking feature has a cool visual style to go along with its fairly well-worn premise. And while I’m not really sure what to expect, there looks to be enough stylish flourish and quirky ‘scares’ to prod my curiously.

Maya (Hannah John-Kamen) and Jamie (Douglas Booth) are a handsome young couple expecting their first child. To get away from the bustle of city life, Maya and Jamie jump at the chance to move into a quiet and cozy country cottage. Sounds nice, but anyone who has seen these kinds of movie knows that they’re is for a rude awakening. In this case it’s bloodthirsty goblins called “Redcaps” who live in and around the house. Horror hijinks ensues.

“Unwelcome” is set for a 2022 release. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

First Glance: “The Book of Boba Fett”

So this might not be a movie preview, but it’s easily one of the most highly anticipated things this year. This morning Disney dropped the highly anticipated first trailer for their upcoming streaming series “The Book of Boba Fett”. Revealed at the end of season two of “The Mandolarian”, the Boba Fett series is set within the Mandolarian timeline. And Lucasfilm has hitched some exciting directors to head the episodes including Robert Rodriguez, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jon Favreau, and of course Dave Filoni.

Temuera Morrison reprises his role as bounty hunter extraordinaire Boba Fett and the first trailer shows him taking the throne once held by the slug-like crime lord Jabba the Hutt. The trailer also shows the return of mercenary and assassin Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) who looks to play a prominent role in the upcoming series. Those familiar with the Star Wars universe should enjoy the various looks we get at iconic locations, familiar species, etc. But the trailer also teases some new things which could/should expand the universe in a number of cool and exciting ways. I can’t wait.

The first episode of “The Book of Boba Fett” is set to premiere December 29th exclusively on Disney+. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

First Glance: “The Unforgivable”

Sandra Bullock returns with her first feature film since the popular Netflix horror-thriller “Bird Box”. She’s once again teaming up with the streaming giant in “The Unforgivable”, an upcoming drama that is part of Netflix’s packed awards season lineup. The film is directed by Nora Fingscheidt and written by the trio of Peter Craig, Hillary Seitz, and Courtenay Miles. It’s based on Sally Wainwright’s 2009 British miniseries “Unforgiven”.

Bullock plays Ruth Slater who is released from prison after serving 20 years for an especially heinous crime. But her attempt at re-entering society proves to be difficult. The community she returns to isn’t ready to forgive her and the only path to redemption may be in reconnecting with her estranged younger sister. Bullock is joined by a sparkling cast that includes Viola Davis, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jon Bernthal, Rob Morgan, and Richard Thomas.

“The Unforgivable” is scheduled for a limited theatrical release November 24th and will stream on Netflix December 10th. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

First Glance: “Ambulance”

For better or for worse you always know what you’re going to get with a Michael Bay film. Sometimes his indulgences are too much and make his action-packed blowouts hard to bear. But when he gets it right, his movies can be exciting, thrill-a-minute experiences. Which will his new film “Ambulance” be? It’s hard to tell from the new trailer, but I do know that I like the look of it and it’s something I’ll watch without a moment’s hesitation. It also helps to have such a compelling cast.

Based on a 2005 Danish film, the story sees Yahya Abdul-Mateen II playing a decorated ex-soldier in desperate need of money for his wife’s surgery. He gets an offer from his close friend and foster brother (Jake Gyllenhaal) to help with a bank heist. The payout is $32 million. Of course the heist hits a snag and soon an ambulance and one unfortunate paramedic (Eiza González) are caught in the middle. The trailer shows (as you might expect) a ton of action and Gyllenhaal looks to be having an absolute blast. I enjoy Abdul-Mateen and González so this could be a lot of fun.

“Ambulance” hits theaters February 18th. Check out the trailers below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

First Glance: “Uncharted”

Bits of information has been swirling around for years about an “Uncharted” movie, and now it has its first trailer and a release day. The film is based on the popular Sony PlayStation action-adventure series of the same name and will star Tom Holland as the game’s protagonist Nathan Drake. Video game adaptations don’t have the best track record, but the “Uncharted” world seems perfect for a big budget blockbuster.

Holland is joined by Mark Wahlberg (who plays his wise-cracking partner Sully) in what looks to be a Nathan Drake origin story. It’s directed by Ruben Fleischer (“Zombieland”, “Venom”) and hops around the globe as Nathan searches for lost treasures in a number of exotic locations. Perhaps the biggest casting treat is Antonio Banderas playing the film’s villain, a “collector” who makes it clear he does more than “dabble”. It’s hard to tell much about the story (which is a good thing), but the movie looks fun and the action scenes should be thrilling.

“Uncharted” hits theaters February 18th. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

Movie Poster Spotlight: “Being the Ricardos”

There has been a lot of buzz (including a lot of critique) about the small teaser for Amazon Studios’ upcoming film “Being the Ricardos”. Maybe I’m crazy, but I’m really anxious for this quirky looking biopic about the relationship of the stars of “I Love Lucy” Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez. I’m intrigued by the cast and the talent behind the camera. And while the teaser didn’t give us a lot to chew on, I kinda love the first poster. What do you think?
