I harp on this ad nauseam but I just can’t help it. I’m a big fan of the comedy genre. I mean who doesn’t love the chance to kick back and enjoy some good laughs? Dating all the way back to the great comedians of the silent movie era, comedies have always had a strong footing in the world of cinema. But to me that footing has grown more unsure over the past several years. In fact it saddens me to say that I rarely watch modern comedies and there are a variety of reasons.

Modern comedies mainly consist of the amateurish Adam Sandler kind of slop to the raunchy, vulgar crap that we seem to get every single month. Sparsely scattered between these films are the rare smart and original comedies that are becoming fewer and farther between. Apparently there is a market for what is being put out there. Take Sandler for example. His movies routinely do well at the box office. They are also routinely awful. And then there are the raunchy comedies which seem to come out regularly in one form or another. Obviously that means there are a lot of people who like it. Personally I’ve never found vulgarity and raunch to be funny. So my choices in today’s comedy genre are pretty limited.

Jack-Black

I fully admit that this is a rather odd topic for a Your Voices feature but what the heck. Jack Black is an actor whose popularity quite honestly baffles me. His brand of comedy and peculiar acting style has certainly resonated with many moviegoers. His filmography is certainly diverse. He has dabbled in an assortment of films including all kinds of comedy, family films, animation, and even big budget adventures.

But let me be honest. I’m no fan of Jack Black. In fact, I would go as far as saying that he is one of the most annoying actors in movie’s today. With the exception of one movie (“Bernie”), none of his films stick with me and most of his performances and roles leave me wishing I had spent my time doing something else. He is one of those few actors who instantly turns me off of any movie he stars in. I thought he was fabulous in “Bernie” so maybe that is a sign of things to come. But as of now I’m not holding my breath.

Your Voices: On the new Star Wars movies

Star-Wars1

Well it’s a bit of old news but in keeping with the recent Star Wars trend at Keith & the Movies I thought I would throw this out there. What are you thoughts on Disney’s confirmed plans to bring us new Star Wars movies? Now it shouldn’t surprise anyone. I mean they didn’t pay that much money to just sit on its current profitability. But there are several legitimate questions about these new episodes. Questions about the plot, questions about the cast, questions about the director.

Usually on Your Voices I try to have a definitive position. But I find myself torn on this one. I’m a Star Wars geek so the prospect of brand new movies really excites me. On the other hand, the franchise is now in new creative hands and there are chances that this could end up being a disaster. Is it a money grab? Will it flow well with the established continuity? Will it capture the spirit of the original films? There is plenty of material there for a great new direction. But there are also plenty of obstacles that could cause this to go terribly wrong.

What are your thoughts on the new Star Wars movies heading to theaters?

Your Voices: On Unknown Movies You Wish Others Would See

Your VoicesWe all have those certain movies that we truly adore yet they remain unseen by a larger audience. They’re movies that may have gotten a smaller release. It could be that they were swept under the rug and are forgotten films. Maybe it’s a foreign release that many people don’t know much about it. Today I want to talk about movies that we love that need a bigger audience. This is an opportunity for everyone to give an unknown or underappreciated film some needed spotlight. It’s also an opportunity for readers to find some hidden gems from their fellow moviegoers. First I’ll tell you my pick and then it will be time for Your Voices.

Flame and

When asked about a movie that I wish would find a broader audience, for me the answer is an easy one. I absolutely love the 2008 Danish World War 2 picture “Flame and Citron” from writer and director Ole Christian Madsen. The film is loosely based on real events and real characters who fought in the underground resistance during the Nazi’s occupation of Denmark. Flame (Thure Lindhardt) got his nickname from his fiery red hair. Citron (Mads Mikkelsen), which means lemon in Danish, got his from his days sabotaging Nazi vehicles while working at the Citroën car company. The two find themselves deeper into the resistance taking on more prominent yet dangerous roles. They also must weed through Nazi sympathizers, disgraceful turncoats, and an assortment if lies and setups.

Everything about this film shines. The fabulous cinematography, the sharp direction from Madsen, and the two amazing performances from Lindhardt and Mikkelsen. In fact, this is the movie that made Mads Mikkelsen a favorite of mine. “Flame and Citron” is filled with dramatic intensity. Whether it’s sitting in a room with a group of Nazi officers with their cover at stake or one of their narrow escapes after taking out a target. And the internal struggles are almost as dangerous as the German occupation. It’s just a brilliant film that grips you every second. I love this movie and it’s one that I champion any chance I get.

So now it’s time for Your Voices. What is an unknown or underappreciated movie that you wish others would see?

So lets get to it. Now you know my thoughts, I would like to hear yours. I hope you’ll take time to share a movie or movies that you think more folks need to see. Have you seen “Flame and Citron”? If not I hope you will give it a shot. I’m anxious to see some of the flicks you have in mind. So let your voices be heard. Thanks again!

Your Voices: On the Future of Movie Theaters

Your Voices

I love going to the movie theater. For me it makes movie-watching an experience. The giant high-definition screens. The booming surround sound. Going to the theater is an escape for me. It’s a chance to get away and immerse myself in another world or another story. These are the main reasons I look forward to every chance I get to sit in my stadium seating chair and enjoy a film at a theater. But some question just how much longer theater viewing will prosper. Today I hope to hear your opinions on this discussion. I’ll talk about it then it will be time for Your Voices.

Theater

Recently there has been a lot of conversation about the future of movie theaters. Some see theaters phasing out. They note the rising prices for taking an entire family to the movies (a feeling that jacked up 3-D prices aren’t helping). Some talk about the advancements in home theater setups. Some point to the ever increasing ‘On Demand’ movies that are available in numerous places. Whatever the reasons some are questioning the life span of the movie theater experience.

Personally I think movie theater viewing is in good shape. It still offers an experience that you just can’t get at home. Now clearly there are things they could do to make the footing more firm. But as a whole, people are still going to the movies and I think they’ll continue to. It’s an interesting discussion and now lets see what you have to say.

So now it’s time for Your Voices. What are your thoughts on the future of movie theaters?

So lets get to it. Now you know my thoughts, I would like to hear yours. I hope you’ll take time to share your thoughts on the fate of movie theaters. Are the above mentioned concerns valid? Do you think theater viewing is safe and sound? Let your voices be heard. Thanks again!

Your Voices: On the Most Disappointing Film of the Year (so far)

Your Voices

I’ve been amazed at how the 2013 movie year has been one of the most divisive in recent history. I know that every year has its share of movies that draw a variety of opinions. But it seems like this year there have been more movies that people have strong opinions on one way or another and the debates over them have been interesting to say the least. Well today I want to tap into some of those opinions. Many of us have expressed our favorite movies of the year so far. I want to focus on the biggest dissappointments of the year so far. I’ll share mine then it will be time for Your Voices.

IM3There have been a number of 2013 movies that I would consider dissappoitments. “Cloud Atlas”, “The Lone Ranger”, and “A Good Day to Die Hard” all fell well short for me but each had their own baggage that had me worried from the start. Then there are films like “Before Midnight” which I had sky-high expectations for but that ultimately left me dissappointed even though it’s still a pretty good movie. That’s the category that “Iron Man 3” falls into for me. At the start of the 2013 movie season “Iron Man 3” was #2 on my Most Anticipated of the Year list. The story sounded good. Robert Downey, Jr. was back. Guy Pearce, Ben Kingsley, and Rebecca Hall joined the cast. It was the launch of the second wave of Marvel’s Avengers solo films and it should have been amazing.

Unfortunately “Iron Man 3” didn’t live up to those expectations. It felt long, at times boring, and it spins off into directions that should infuriate any fan of the source material. But my aversion to the big changes isn’t just a fanboy’s rage. They don’t work all that well in the film and end up undoing the movies strengths. I really wanted more from “Iron Man 3”. But for me it fell into the same traps that many superhero third installments have (I’m looking at you “Spider-Man 3” and “X-Men: The Last Stand”). And even though it isn’t a horrible movie by any means, it still never succeeds as it should have.

So now you know my choice. It’s time for Your Voices. What has been the most disappointing film if 2013 so far?

So lets get to it. I hope you’ll take time to list some of your choices and share a few comments about them. Let everyone know why your pick left you disappointed. I have a feeling many of the films mentioned will also have their share of fans. Its been that kind of year. Thanks again!
