One the biggest and most eagerly anticipated movies of 2020 has to be “Dune”, a massive science-fiction epic from visionary director Denis Villeneuve. This is the first of a two-film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s award-winning 1965 novel. David Lynch’s attempted to tackle the story in 1984, but his film bombed at the box office and with critics. Villeneuve is swinging for the fences with his December blockbuster that finally dropped its first full trailer today!
Our first real look at the film plays mostly like a showcase for its stellar cast. The film stars Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgard, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, Charlotte Rampling, and others. Most get some screen time (poor Bardem only gets a wink). We get a few fragments of story and a handful of stunning shots from cinematographer Greig Fraser. It’s a good introduction and I hope to see more of the world in the next trailer.
“Dune” hits theaters December 18th. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.
I saw the review in the movie theaters last weekend. Of course I’m in!!! I have fond memories of the originial one in the 80s.
What a cast, right? And the pure scale of this thing is really exciting. And December will be here before you know it.
And it should be watched on the big screen.
Are you able to go to your local movie theater yet?
Oh yes. Tenet twice, The New Mutants, and Jurassic Park. 🙂
There is a rumor it will get bumped to next year. Tenet will open in the currently closed NY and LA markets, pushing back WW84 which rolls back to 2021. If that happens, I will turn into Rick Dalton by the pool. Hollywood, my flamethrower is loaded.
WOW! That would chap a lot of hides. Isn’t WW84 set for October 2nd? My daughter would be devastated if that gets moved again!
Maybe to November, which is why Dune moves. Nothing official yet. The world is uncertain.
Uncertain indeed. It’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out.
Hearing some rumors of Marvel Studios moving Black Widow back so I would not be surprised that other movies get pushed also.
Hilarious!
WW84 has officially been moved to Christmas Day. Waiting for the other shoe to drop.
I saw that. So disappointing.
This does look great. I went to read what people at IndieWire has to say as they bitch about how flat the film looks and such. I was like… “whatever”. It’s not going to be the David Lynch version (which wasn’t very good) nor was it going to be as visually-insane as what Alejandro Jodorowsky would’ve done. It does look incredible but also fucking epic in its look and scope. Plus, I have to give Villeneuve credit for at least using a Pink Floyd cover for the trailer’s music since Jodorowsky did want Floyd to do some music for his own film version.
I thought it looked fine. But as I wrote this trailer seemed more focused on highlighting the extensive (and insanely good) cast. But we did get several impressive world shots. Plus, you know we will be seeing more before it arrives.
This is my most anticipated movie of the year and I’m an ardent admirer of the book series too. But, I do find it interesting that the trailer did not specify any definitive release date. I think it may move to next year.
I caught that too. I hope it doesn’t get pushed but others have mentioned it. We will know before long. What did you think of Lynch’s version?
I liked Lynch’s version to a point. It’s a truncated and flawed adaptation. However, it’s commendable for still retaining some of his aesthetic and penchant for strikingly weird imagery. I was lucky enough to see the film on 70mm a couple of years ago.
Oh that sounds cool. I haven’t seen that movie in years. It’s been so long that it would be almost like a new watch for me. I may try to give it a look before seeing the new one.
That’s interesting. I look forward to your revisited thoughts of the film. I’m always going to have a slight soft spot for the film. It got me into David Lynch, Brian Eno and ambient music.
The preview looks very good. The only major issue I see with it is who they chose to be Paul Atreides. Not fair to give a young punk like him, who hasn’t earned his chops, such a juicy role. I looked at wiki to see that Paul was only 15 when the family was forced to move to Arrakis but it doesn’t say how old he was when he took over for his dad. Of course the hottest new stars are the biggest box office draw, regardless of their acting abilities or if they’ve earned it. I’ll see it but I’m disappointed.
I know Charlamet is red hot right now but I haven’t been blown away by him. I think he’s given some good performances but I’m not quite ready to christen him as ‘the biggest thing in movies’ just yet. His handling of this role will tell a lot.
Well-said!
Well I know nothing about Dune, the book, the older movie version, nothing, de nada, niente. So I’m coming to this all virgin~like and that trailer looks SO epic, and Pink Floyd, class. I’m more excited for this than Tenet TBH. I might even (shock, horror) go to the cinema for it!
Boooo! Tenet is calling for you!
Tenet was horrible!!
Loved it.
This is a nice cast and I think based off of what I just saw this could win a few Oscars. Calling it now! Movie of the year?
Movie of the year? It’ll have to work hard to top TENET on my list. Also, notice there is no date on the trailer. Rumors swirling Dune could get pushed to 2021. I hope not, but we’ll see.
I am so hyped for this movie. Everything about…the director, the cast, look of it all….I can’t wait for this movie to come out!!!!
It has all the ingredients, right?
It looks good! I read the book years ago and don’t much remember the plot, so I won’t be annoyed if they change things 😉
I’m ashamed to say it, but I have never read the book. I have a friend who says it is incredible but he may just be trying to shame me. 😂
I was a little underwhelmed by the book, but I could see how influential it was.
I’ll definitely be watching it.
Same! But it’s looking more and more like it will be next year.
I hear Black Widow’s been pushed back to next May, which’ll make 2020 the first year since 2010 in which the MCU doesn’t release a movie.
That’s right. How crazy is that? Just stresses how big the MCU has become.
It’s my personal favourite film series.
(Sorry, I meant to say 2009, not 2010.)
I personally thought this movie was way too long and boring!
I was excited for more Jason Momoa and Dave Batiste – very disappointed!!
Overall the acting was great but story awful
Bummer. Easily one of my favorites of the year.
