It has been a long time since the Marvel Cinematic Universe has felt substantial. That doesn’t mean there hasn’t been new content. It simply means it has been a while since the MCU was at the heights of its heyday. “Avengers: Doomsday” is the first Marvel movie in years that teases us with an excitement and gravity that has been missing since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame”. To know what I mean, look no further than the first trailer which will surely have fans everywhere talking.
Anthony and Joe Russo return to helm what looks to be a mammoth cinematic event that pulls from every corner of the established MCU. Without trying to parse through the lumbering phases and multiverse baggage, “Doomsday” brings together the MCU’s heroes from different universes to face off with a powerful new threat – Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.). The trailer is essentially a collage of faces that we can expect to see – some older favorites, some newer forgettables, and some cool surprises.
Marvel Entertainment has dropped a fun and reasonably effective trailer that ends with a bang. But will it stir up the kind of excitement that energized the MCU in its prime. Or will it prove what many are saying – that superhero fatigue has set in and the genre’s glory days are behind it? The optimist in me can see it being the much needed jolt the Marvel Universe needs.

Keith & the Movies 
I’m mixed on it. It looks good but I have too many reservations as it relates to the Russo Brothers and their post-<i>Endgame</i> films as I have no confidence that it will work.
I definitely want to know more about the story. This was the kind of trailer that will certain work up fans. But it doesn’t give us much to go on beyond that.
Honestly, this trailer didn’t move the needle for me. In fact, it left me pretty cold. It looks like a lot of nostalgia-bait to me, and I’m really getting sick of that. I think the last 6 years of the MCU and DC stuff broke me when it comes to superhero movies. I don’t see anything here that doesn’t feel like CGI-generated slop. Fantastic Four was fun for what it was as it was mostly a stand-alone movie, and I really wish Marvel would get back to doing stand-alone movies that had no connections to the others. The Infinity Saga worked because everybody knew what it was building up to, and it delivered. The Multiverse Saga was an exercise in desperation, stupidity and bad ideas. They should’ve ended this years ago.
I’m assuming that after Secret Wars, it’s going to be The Mutant Saga or something ridiculous. Can we just STOP with the Sagas? Does everything need to be part of some kind of continuity? Maybe I’m no longer the audience for movies like this. I’ve been so disappointed with superhero movies lately that the most positive thing I can say or give is a shrug. I hope people love this movie. I really do. But I won’t be seeing it in theaters. I might rent it on Fandango at Home at some point.
I think it’s every bit aimed at nostalgia by cramming in as many characters as it can without offering anything story-related. I do think it works on that level – as an extended teaser. And I think there is potential despite me not caring about many of the newer characters. But I do think there are some real questions that are worth asking.
As a die-hard MCU fan, I’ve been dying pretty hard with that universe post-Endgame…except when Spider-Man is involved. I always wanted to have another Endgame-type mega-character movie, but I was hoping for the next batch of Avengers to, a) be of quality and, b) have more than one movie on their resume. It seems desperate to me to have these brand-new heroes already in a multi-hero film, and of course the folding in of X-Men characters is something I don’t know we even needed. All that being said, I will be there on opening day hoping for a great film.
I’ll be there too with all of the concerns that you shared. I’m not nearly as invested in this new batch of heroes as I was the original batch. In fact I have zero interest in the “New Avengers”. But we will see. I’m hoping they pull it off because the MCU need a boost.

I would like to hope this is a good return, but I’m very concerned that Disney will stretch this out into yet another 15 movies and 14 of them will be woke and pitifully poor storytelling.
After Superman, I’m done with superhero universes. Give me standalones or trilogies, but nothing longer. Or I won’t be watching.
This is kind of where I’m at. I think, at some point, the idea of the cinematic universe needs to be put to bed. It worked for the Infinity Saga, but that was it, and after Endgame, it fell apart. We saw Zack Snyder try with the DCEU, and that ended up getting rebooted with less than impressive results so far. The whole Dark Universe with Universal’s monsters died before it got off the ground.
Yep. It worked once, but not again anywhere else.
Superhero movies have really hit multiple speedbumps and I completely get why people are losing interest. I’m going to go in optimistic but I have no belief that this will match the greatness of Infinity War/Endgame.
I liked the Marvel movies when the stakes were less apocalyptic than the fate of the universe, like Ironman One, stakes you could identify with. And when they didn’t pack in every single character in the Marvel universe, just a couple is fine. This seems to be another one that goes big.
Yep. Goes big but without the character investment that made us care so much before.
I might try watching this on streaming because as usual, a story with too many characters and super speed CGI is a bit off-putting. But Dr Doom is an interesting powerful villain. so we’ll see!
