First Glance: “Top Gun: Maverick”

“Top Gun” is one of many 80s movies that I’ve seen more times than I can count. It was among several that always found its way into our family VCR. I’m aware that it doesn’t play as well for younger audiences today as it did then, but I still love it for its undeniable cheese and deeper subtexts.

But even I was surprised to hear that some 34 years later a sequel was on the way. Tom Cruise himself surprised a crowd at San Diego Comic-Con and introduced the teaser trailer for “Top Gun: Maverick”. We don’t see much in terms of story but fans of the original will notice it does hit many familiar beats. Cruise finished up by telling the crowd everything in the film is real and calling the movie “a love letter to aviation”.

I’m really interested to see and hear more, but we will probably have to wait a while. “Top Gun: Maverick” is set for a June 26, 2020 release. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

First Glance: “Don’t Let Go”

Thrillers come in all shapes and sizes. You could categorize Jacob Aaron Estes’ “Don’t Let Go” as a supernatural action-crime thriller. That’s certainly a mouthful but judging from the new trailer all of those descriptions seem to fit.

David Oyelowo stars as police detective who is devastated after losing his family to an intensely violent crime. While trying to cope he receives a phone call from his niece who was among those killed. Here’s the catch – she’s calling from two weeks in the past, before the murders took place. Weird, right? Promising concept for sure.

“Don’t Let Go” is set to open August 30th. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

Vacation Time!

Just a quick post to say that I’ll be on vacation this week with my family so the content will be a little light this week. I’m heading down to the Gulf of Mexico for plenty of beach time and even more fresh seafood. And time away with my wife and kids is always a blast.

But fear not (as if you feared this anyway), I do have a couple of posts planned including a review of a film that I think is easily one of the year’s best. Look for it probably around Wednesday. But that’s it for now. Have a great week! I know I will! 😎

First Glance: “Midway”

MIDWAY

I’ll always remember the star-studded 1976 film “Midway” as my father’s all-time favorite war movie. It looks like Hollywood is heading back to the Pacific Theater with a new take on the most decisive naval battle of World War II. The new trailer offers plenty of reasons to believe a new “Midway” could work. It also gives us reasons for concern.

On the positive side, I love some of the names attached: Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, Dennis Quaid, Woody Harrelson, and Aaron Eckhart. Plus the trailer shows off some pretty thrilling visuals which could add a lot to this subject. But why be concerned? In two words – Roland Emmerich, a director with a history of numerous high-profile misfires. Look no further than his last film, the atrocious “Independence Day: Resurgence”.

So what do you think of the potential of “Midway”? It hits theaters November 8th. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you will be seeing it or taking a pass.

First Glance: “Charlie’s Angels”

Add this one to the ever-growing list of Hollywood reboots/remakes that no one asked for. I certainly never expected to see “Charlie’s Angels” back on the big screen following the two ridiculously bad movies from the early 2000s. Yet here we are with a new cast, new director, but (judging from the first trailer) much of the same cringy silliness as before.

The cast is a bit surprising but does seem to fit with the film’s obvious desire for diversity. Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska play the ‘Angels”. The biggest surprise is Elizabeth Banks. She directs, writes, co-produces, and co-stars so this truly is her project. It’s a surprising series for her to try and revive and our first look doesn’t leave the best impression.

“Charlie’s Angels” hits theaters November 15th. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

First Glance: “The Peanut Butter Falcon”

I’ll be surprised if there is another 2019 movie with a more unique title than “The Peanut Butter Falcon”. This road-trip drama from co-directors and co-writers Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz premiered at South By Southwest and was picked up by Roadside Attractions.

The film follows a young man with Down Syndrome (played by newcomer Zachary Gottsagen) who dreams of becoming a professional wrestler. His troubled home life pushes him to run away to pursue his dream. He crosses paths with a hapless crab fisherman (a surprisingly compelling Shia LaBeouf) who finds fulfillment in leading Gottsagen’s character to a small North Carolina wrestling school.

The supporting cast is really strong – Dakota Johnson, Bruce Dern, John Hawkes, Jon Bernthal, Thomas Haden Church, and wrestlers Mick Foley and Jake Roberts. The film hits theaters August 9th. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or giving it a pass.
