First Glance: “Space Jam: A New Legacy”

Full disclosure: I was never a part of the original “Space Jam” craze. I was 25-years-old when the movie came out in 1996 and never felt inclined to see it during its initial release. I watched it later (at least most of it) and nothing about it has stuck with me. I say that to fully admit my lack of nostalgia for the upcoming sequel, some 25 years after the first film. Yet I still found myself mildly interested for a handful of reasons, mainly because I grew up on Looney Tunes. But I have to say, the latest trailer for the $150 million live-action/animated mash-up did nothing to ease my apprehension.

This time around LeBron James takes the place of Michael Jordan and must save his son from a diabolical A.I. played by Don Cheadle. How does he do it? By putting together a team of classic Looney Toon characters (Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Yosemite Sam, Porky Pig, etc.) and beating the A.I.’s evil all-stars in a game of basketball. One thing I will say about the trailer is that the blend of live-action and animation looks great. Both the characters and backgrounds and vibrant and full of color. On the flip-side, after seeing the trailer I don’t know if I can sit through 90-minutes or more of Lebron’s cringe-inducing acting. Whew!

“Space Jam: A New Legacy” releases July 16th in theaters and streaming on HBO Max. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

  1. Yeah man I can’t imagine this movie is going to do anything positive for you if you weren’t on board with the original.

Space Jam is a cult classic and an absolute gem from the 90s, and I say that in full recognition of the film’s shameless product placement/upselling of merch. It’s 100% a commercial, both for the league and for Looney Tunes, but man does the original leave me with fond memories. I can’t vouch for LeBron though, his acting might be worse than MJs lol

  2. My son who was 6 wanted to see the original, so off we went. He was a big Looney Tunes fan and liked MJ. Needless to say, he wasn’t impressed at 6 and I grew up with Bugs and the gang and only wished they got a better movie to get them back in the spotlight. My son, now 30 jokes about how he made me endure it lol . He tried to rewatch the original and shut it off halfway through. Needless to say hard pass for us both on this one. Plus we both find James insufferable. Too bad because I love Bugs Bunny and all those iconic characters.

  3. I remember the original film though I wish they got rid of that awful song by that ugly-ass pedophile R. Kelly. It was a good film that featured a great cameo from Bill Murray. I have no interest in this one as I’m not interested in seeing LeBum.

He’s not even in my list of the all-time greats because he’s a sore loser.

      • And that is why Michael Jordan is a GOAT. He’s got charisma, he can act and… always won. Yet, he also took losing with some dignity and respect. I can understand not wanting to lose but it’s best to lose with your head held high knowing you can beat them another day.

  4. Never saw the original and no interest in this one. I really don’t like that kind of animation. I do see why they would do a reboot though and why they would use Lebron.

  6. I loved the original, but don’t think I’ll be seeing the new one. I can’t really get into the live action looney tunes, I much prefer their cartoon animation charm.
