First Glance: “The New Mutants”

New Mutants

In case someone was under the impression that comic book movies were on the decline (and who on earth would actually think that) the 20th Century Fox division of Disney’s Marvel movies has a new one right around the corner. “The New Mutants” was first pitched back in 2014 but has had a pretty drastic change of direction since. That said, it was never a movie on my radar.

“The New Mutants” moved from being a simple X-Men spin-off picture to a superhero horror movie, something that makes its potentially dull concept at least a little interesting. A new batch of young mutants are discovering their powers but instead of finding the compassionate Charles Xavier and his school for the gifted they find themselves being held in a secret test facility ran by people who (obviously) don’t have their best intentions in mind.

The new trailer is now out in the wild and shows a mix of teen horror and mutant discovery. We’ve seen them both before but never together like this. I can’t say I’m all that excited but let’s see where it goes. The film hits theaters April 3rd. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

  1. I’m probably going to give this one a go. I like the horror angle it’s attempting. I’ve said before that in the crowded landscape of superhero movies, in order to stand out, a film can’t be a traditional superhero film (usually). So at least this is trying something different. Considering one of the character’s power is to essentially transform into a werewolf, the potential is there.

  2. I’ll give this one a shot as it looks different and it has a different tone in comparison to the recent films of the X-Men series as it has been lackluster after the heights of X-Men: Days of Future Past (not counting Logan and the Deadpool films).

    • I did like Logan but not the Deadpool movies (unlike most people). I’ll see this one but parts of it looks really familiar. I’m hoping the horror element works. That’s the draw for me.

  3. I’ll be surprised if this film is anything less than a shit show with all the push backs and behind the scenes drama that has been leaked all over the internet. I like the trailers and probably will see it, but I have rock bottom expectations

  4. I’ll definitely be watching this one, I’ve been waiting for this one since it was first announced and have been so disappointed by all the push backs. Fingers crossed it’s worth the wait.
