First Glance: “Morbius”

Morbius

How weird is it that I find myself just as intrigued by Sony’s hard-to-define SpiderVerse as I am Marvel’s huge sprawling MCU? And it isn’t really a SpiderVerse mainly because of Sony’s strict contractual obligations to Marvel. So it’s essentially SpiderVerse without a Spider-Man…I think.

Anyway, the newest addition looks to be “Morbius” which follows the immensely profitable “Venom”. The film looks to be telling the origin story of Dr. Michael Morbius, a conflicted villain soon turned antihero who ends up with vampiric superpowers. Jared Leto looks to be a great fit but it’s the surprising cameo at the end of the trailer that really excites me! It adds an entirely new twist to what Sony’s superhero universe may look like.

“Morbius” is set to hit theaters July 31st. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

  1. I have always liked the character of Morbius and when I heard about this movie , was a tad skeptical .But I have to say the trailer has won me over. Leto for me has always been hit or miss but he looks right and looks to have nailed what I was looking for . Plus the cameo at the end ! Intriguing to say the least .

    • I’ve always thought Morbius was cool too. This movie seems to be tapping into the dark side of the character while also looking at home in the superhero genre. And oooooh that cameo! Could that open the door to other ‘crossover’ characters?

  2. I’m glad you liked the trailer and that it’s made you interested in seeing it. However, my interest in it is quite low. To me, the trailer plays like a boring mashup of the science gone wrong genre along with the most passionless vampire movie you’ve ever seen.

    • I’m excited mainly because of the Morbius character himself. And it does have the ancient ritual gone wrong element I didn’t see it as a vampire movie. Superhero vampire maybe..😂

      • I’m curious about the film because of the Morbius character. However, so far, it seems too po-faced for its own good. Perhaps further footage will change my mind. I like Superhero vampire movie.

  3. Morbius is a character I don’t know much about but I see pretty much every comic book movie that comes out so I’ll see this too. I’m interested if Feige just ignores it moving forward, especially if it bombs.

    • Morbius is a pretty cool character. Some dark backstory for sure. What do you think about Leto? I’m not a huge fan of his but he looks good for this.

  4. I’ll very likely go to see this; like you, I find Sony’s Marvel Universe strangely fascinating. (Although I haven’t seen Venom yet.) Especially since Morbius could well connect to the MCU.
