Ok, so technically this isn’t a first glance at the movie since its first teaser trailer dropped several months back. Instead consider this a first glance at trailer #2 for “Spiral: From the Book of Saw” which gives us a better feel for what this movie is going for. It’s officially the ninth movie in the “Saw” franchise and considered a sequel and not a reboot. I’m hardly what you would call a “Saw” movie connoisseur (I’ve only seen a couple of them). But this trailer caught my attention most notably for its casting.
“Spiral” stars comedian Chris Rock as a big city detective who gets caught up in a grisly murder investigation. Soon he’s sucked into a gruesome and deadly game by someone with all the markings of the Jigsaw killer. The film also stars Samuel L. Jackson playing a retired detective and Rock’s father. I’ll be honest, I’ve had a hard time visualizing Chris Rock in a role like this and the trailer doesn’t do much to ease my mind. It looks like it could be an interesting turn for the franchise but it will depend on how big of a hurdle Rock’s casting turns out to be.
“Spiral: From the Book of Saw” releases May 14th. Check out the new trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.
Why why why Chris!? I can see Samuel L Jackson doing it. I mean, he did, “Snakes on a Plane,” so why not Saw? But Chris? Go for a Rom Com, buddy!
I hope he surprises me. I really do. But once he starts yelling in the trailer I can’t help but start thinking about his comedy acts.
I think sometimes it is good for actors to take risk. I can see why Chris Rock did it, I know I would if I had the opportunity.
Oh that’s 100% why he did it and I don’t blame him for giving it a go. But when he starts that Chris Rock yelling I can’t help but think of ‘Chris Rock the Comedian’. I’m still giving it a shot. 👍🏼
I think all comedy actors have to try the serious side, and vice versa, can’t be good creatively to get stuck in a rut. I don’t think I’d watch this as I’ve stayed away from all Saw stuff.
For sure. It’s good to do if you have that range. But he didn’t really show me he does in that trailer. No final judgments though. I’m anxious to give it a shot.
I’m iffy on this as I’ve seen some of those films and the first one was good but it got worse with diminishing returns though Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson do give me a reason to see if it’s any good.
Jackson intrigues me. Rock not so much. But I love being surprised.
I’ve seen Chris Rock live and the man is pure hilarity. I never knew there were that many Saw movies.
Soooo many Saw movies. I think I’ve only seen two.
