Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu’s latest feature “Fjord” has already proven to be one of his most acclaimed films yet. “Fjord” has been heralded by critics after winning the Palme d’Or at the most recent Cannes Film Festival. Mungiu wrote and directed this legal thriller / domestic drama that has since been purchased by NEON for distribution. Now it has a United States release on the horizon and it looks to be a legitimate player come awards season. If you’re wondering why, just check out the riveting new trailer.
Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve play Mihai and Lisbet Gheorghiu, a conservative Romanian-Norwegian couple who move their family to Lisbet’s progressive coastal hometown for a fresh start. But when their traditional beliefs about parenting upset the far more liberal locals, a legal battle erupts over the welfare of the children. It’s a powerful topic inspired by a real-word controversy that saw a couple’s children seized by the Norwegian authorities. Judging by the trailer Mungiu takes a firmly grounded approach which this kind of material demands.
“Fjord” releases in theaters on October 9th. Check out the new trailer and poster below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.
