Idris Elba pulls double duty in the upcoming science-fiction survival thriller “Above the Below”. The accomplished 54-year-old actor not only stars in his latest feature but also co-directs alongside Martin Owen. The new trailer dropped in theaters last week and it teases what looks to be an edge-of-your-seat race against the clock that starts in space and ends deep on the ocean floor. Joining Elba in his harrowing scenario is Caitlin FitzGerald and Hero Fiennes Tiffin.
The story (written by Elizabeth Morris, Matt Mitchell, and Vicki Sargent) follows three astronauts who are forced back to Earth following a disaster in space. While entering the planet’s atmosphere, their capsule is knocked off-course and sent plunging into the ocean. As they sink to the bottom of the sea, the crew must face the intense underwater pressure, no communication with mission control, and a dwindling oxygen supply in order to live. All the ingredients are here for an effective nail-biter.
“Above the Below” plunges into theaters December 4th. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.
Am loving that soundtrack, which does a great job of notching up tension. I just don’t see how much can be built out of the components youve given here. 3 people, 1 ship, clautrophobia, clock ticking. Streaming maybe but not going to the theater to see it.
