There are so many reasons to be excited for the upcoming World War II naval war film “Greyhound”. It starts with Tom Hanks, always good in front of the camera, but here he also serves as screenwriter. Even more, the movie is directed by Aaron Schneider, his first film since 2009 fantastic “Get Low”. Can’t wait to see him back in the director’s chair. And then you have the incredible true story from which the film is based.

Well now we get the first trailer and I’m even more excited. Hanks stars as Lieutenant Commander Ernest Krause, a career Navy officer finally given his first command. And boy it’s a doozy. He’s tasked with escorting an international convey across the treacherous North Atlantic. They immediately are hunted by a pack of German U-boats which puts Krause’s leadership and confidence to the ultimate test.

Add another movie to the “they’re remaking what???” list. I remember renting 1992’s “Candyman” on VHS tape from one of our local video stores. It was based on a Clive Barker short story and featured Tony Todd as the hook-armed title character. Unlike its two fairly crappy sequels, the original had a compelling social subtext to go along with its satisfying genre appeal. I still didn’t see it as a movie needing an update.

But we live in a age where even “Fantasy Island” gets remade so nothing should surprise us. “Candyman” 2020 has an interesting name attached. Jordan Peele is co-producing and co-writing what is being called a spiritual sequel to the original film. The first trailer is a bit messy and all over the place, but it looks to be tapping into what the original film was known for – being a gory horror film with a social conscience. Can it pull it off?

If you’re looking for that warm, fuzzy Mother’s Day movie to treat your mom to, well….this ain’t it. “Run” is a psychological thriller that comes from Aneesh Chaganty. His last film was the fascinating technology/social media thriller “Searching” starring John Cho. That film was made for just over $850,000 but made over $75 million at the box office. Many of us were excited to see what he would do next.

Now we know. It’s a horror thriller starring Sarah Paulson and Kiera Allen. The twisted first trailer shows a not-so-normal mother/daughter relationship built on a potentially disturbing secret. Paulson plays the overprotective mother to the wheelchair bound daughter Allen. Clearly all is not what it appears to be and the daughter soon suspects her mom of some rather sinister shenanigans.

“Run” is set to hit theaters May 8th, Mother’s Day weekend (how about that). Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’ll be seeing it or taking a pass.

Chalk it up to me simply not paying attention, but I had no idea David Lowery had a new movie coming this year. He captured my attention on 2017 with his haunting and meditative drama “A Ghost Story” and followed it by working with Robert Redford in “The Old Man & the Gun”. Lowery’s latest “The Green Knight” sees him putting his own unique spin on Authurian medieval fantasy. I’m in.

“The Green Knight” sports a killer cast led by Dev Patel. He plays King Arthur’s impulsive and obstinate nephew Sir Gawain who sets off on a quest to challenge the mysterious Green Knight. The film also stars Joel Edgerton, Alicia Vikander, and Sean Harris among others. The first trailer features an eerie and slightly twisted vibe and shows off Lowery’s knack for visual storytelling.

Long time readers of mine probably know that I have a real soft spot for movies that tell the more personal stories surrounding World War 2. They can take place on the battlefield, deal with the horrors of the Holocaust, or share one of the many great efforts of resistance. There are so many inspiring stories that came out of such a profoundly dark and deadly conflict.

There should be no doubt about the subject of writer-director Jonathan Jakubowicz’s biographical wartime drama “Resistance”. In it Jessie Eisenberg plays the famous mime Marcel Marceau who has a young man saved the lives of many children as a member of the French Resistance. The first trailer shows off a convincing period style and the story itself is naturally compelling. Eisenberg’s accent is a bit iffy, but not enough to quell my enthusiasm. I’m really anxious to give this a shot.

Any (and I do mean ANY) time a Wes Anderson movie is announced I’m instantly onboard; curious, enthused, and anxious for any glimpse into what the brilliantly idiosyncratic filmmaker is up to. The unique style, the daffy humor, the feast of striking eye candy is all guaranteed. And while I know Anderson isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, I find his movies to be delightful.

Which brings us to the long awaited first look at “The French Dispatch”, Anderson’s tenth film and yet another another star-studded affair. As with his others, Anderson writes and directs this story of an American journalist based in a fictional French city who creates a magazine called The French Dispatch. It seems as if the film focuses on the three short stories published in the Dispatch‘s final issue.

The trailer reveals what looks like a Wes Anderson movie on steroids. It’s all but impossible to discern what all is shown and it’s main emphasis seems to be on the peculiar filmmaking style Anderson has become known for. I do wish the trailer wasn’t quite so hyperactive. On the other hand, I absolutely love it.
